Public Utilities

The first public utility to be opened in Dover was the gas works, operated by the Dover Gas Company, in Trevanion Street, later transferred to Union Road (Coombe Valley Road).

This same company was also responsible for one of the first water works: the Eastern Waterworks, at East Cliff.  The other: the Western Waterworks, was operated by the Oil Mills in the Pier District.  Later, the Corporation opened the new works on the hill below the Castle, which still serves the town today.

The first electricity supply was produced by the Dover Electricity Company at their generating station in Park Street.
