These pages (currently over 215) contain pictures (currently around 500) and descriptions of the older parts of Dover as they exist today, including some archive photos, maps and background information on the area and how it relates to our family histories, and some brief biographies of local characters. Some of the photos are courtesy of the Dover Public Library picture collection. New pages are being added all the time - don't forget to keep looking!
Coming soon: a Calendar of Dover Mayors, from the Domesday Book to the First World War (extracted from "Annals of Dover," by John Bavington Jones).
Many of the pages have been recently updated with historical information gleaned from "DOVER, A Perambulation of the Town, Port and Fortress," , local author and one-time editor of the Dover Express, printed and published at the Dover Express Printing Works, 185 Snargate Street, in 1907.
The "On This Day" database is extracted from "When was it?", by John Bavington Jones, published in 1908. This page will change automatically at 5am every day (local UK time). (New - database still being updated)
Other information from the "Dover Express & East Kent News", the "Dover Telegraph" and various local history books.
